The renovation of Llwyncelyn has obviously been a labour of love for owners Paul and Di. Their care and attention to detail during the restoration process is apparent in every corner of this lovely two bedroom stone built cottage in Dinas Mawddwy.

The original inglenook in the lounge was a surprise discovery for them. Its restoration and the introduction of a small log burner provide a natural focal point in the lounge. The view out the window is of course spectacular but it’s the small details that really impress. The cast rose-head nails used to fix the wood paneling, the hand made wind chime hanging on the wall as well as the oak ledge and brace doors are all testament to their care and devotion.

The kitchen-diner next door is small but full of character. Natural materials such as Welsh slate and oak have been adopted throughout. The original roof beams have been exposed and a second log burner sits on a grey slate hearth. Off to the left there’s a small utility room with washing machine and fridge freezer as well as the ground floor shower room and wc.

Two bedrooms upstairs. One bedroom has a double bed with fantastic views across the valley once again. The second bedroom has a day bed which can be expanded into a double but that would be a bit of a squeeze for guest staying for a week or more. All the furnishings and linen are appropriately elegant.

Location

Anyone familiar with this part of southern Snowdonia will know how spectacular the landscape is in this area. And Llwyncelyn is in a prime position to enjoy it looking as it does, across the Mawddwy valley. ‘A walkers paradise’ is the standard phrase reeled out, but it’s undoubtedly true in this instance. Less crowded than the slopes of Snowdon the mountains in this part of the national park provide a real opportunity to explore the true wild Wales.

Not as wild as during the 16th century however, when ‘Gwylliaid Cochion Mawddwy’ or ‘The Red Haired Bandits of Mawddwy’ prowled the high pass leading to Dinas Mawddwy. Their notoriety is preserved in many of the names of local places including the village pub, ‘Y Llew Coch’, The Red Lion. Thankfully the pass is now free of highwaymen so guests can easily travel to the numerous tourist destinations. The seaside towns of Aberdyfi and Towyn are a short drive away and the town of Bala more inland is famous for its fishing and whitewater rafting.

Corris, another nearby village, has the world renowned ‘Centre for Alternative Technology’ as well as a small craft village and ‘King Arthurs Labyrinth’, an underground tour certain to capture a child’s imagination. But anyone with a love of the great outdoors is sure to enjoy a stay in this lovely cottage.
